Ever since receiving my first Ipsy two years ago, I’ve been completely hooked on subscription boxes. There are few things more exciting than receiving a package full of awesome beauty products for only $10. But I’ve always had trouble deciding which box was my favorite: Ipsy, Birchbox, or Play! By Sephora?
Here’s what I received this month:
Through Birchbox, you get the choice to pick one of three samples and have the rest selected based of your profile, or select that month’s curated box. This month, I went for the curated box.
From my experience, Birchbox tends to select more skin-oriented products in comparison to Sephora and Ipsy, who seem to mainly focus on makeup. Also, while you’re more likely to get higher-end brands in your box, the samples are usually smaller in comparison to Ipsy. However, this month I received a good variety, including a hair product, two skin products, and two makeup products.
Davines SU Hair & Body Wash (6/10)
I definitely preferred this on the body, as I didn’t feel it did any more than my regular shampoo for my hair. It has a fresh floral/”green” scent and cleansed my body and hair feeling thoroughly cleansed.
Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash Mascara (10/10)
I’ve been a die-hard fan of the Benefit They’re Real! mascara for a few years, but had never branched out to trying their Roller Lash. I must say, I’m a convert! It did everything I want a mascara to do: give me long, thick, curled, non-clumpy lashes. I will definitely be purchasing this in full-size!
Murad Oil-Control Mattifier SPF 15 (2/10)
This was the dud of the box this month. While I like skincare that includes SPF, and it did a fine job at hydrating my skin, this product did nothing to mattify my oily skin. And for $40 full-sized? Pass.
Davroe Ends Repair Leave-In Treatment (7/10)
Even after one use, this product has made a fair difference in repairing some of the dryness of the ends of my hair. I also appreciate the large sample size of this product. As someone with extra-thick, long hair, hair samples are rarely enough to get a good trial of the product.
Mellow Cosmetics Liquid Lip Paint in Tehran (10/10)
This one ties with the Roller Lash for the best product in my box this month. I’m currently all about nude-pink lip products lately (very original, I know) and this one is a beautiful, versatile color and comfortable formula. It has lived in my purse for the the past week and will likely stay a little longer.
MAC Patentpolish Lip Pencil in Look Lively (1/10)
This product was free this month with a coupon code. I was very excited to try a new product from MAC, especially what appeared to be a nice petal pink. However, I was surprised to see that this color is actually a bright electric pink that totally doesn’t work on me. The formula is thick and sticky and accentuates every flaw on my lips. Overall, this was a complete fail for me.
With Ipsy, you will receive five random beauty samples based on your profile. You also get a cute new makeup bag each month that I have found tons of uses for.
As I said, Ipsy tends to send more full-sized products, but usually from lesser known brands-not that this is a bad thing! I love getting to try new brands and make new discoveries, which is what I love about Ipsy the most.
PUR Fully Charged Mascara (8/10)
I’m a huge fan of mascara samples in my subscription boxes and this one does not disappoint! While not quite as good as the Roller Lash, this one does a good job of lengthening and thickening my lashes. I don’t see myself repurchasing, but it’s nice to have so I can save my Roller Lash for special occasions!
Beauty for Real I-Line Eyeliner in 24Karat (7/10)
The formula and wear of this product are amazing! This product does not budge, even on my oily eyelids, however I’m not a fan of colored liners so I don’t see myself getting a ton of use out of this
theBalm Blush in In Full Swing (10/10)
The color of this blush is perfect for my fair skin and creates the perfect natural flush. This could be considered a con, but I like a blush that’s not very strongly pigmented as I find they blend better and create a more natural look with my skin color, and this delivers.
Kokie Nail Polish in Atlantis at Last (9/10)
This polish is the most easy-to-apply formula. It’s completely opaque in just one or two coats and the shade is a beautiful bold blue. The only reason I didn’t give it a solid “10” is because I feel that the color has been done quite a bit before and was so sad to not receive the other color option, a bright coral shade.
skyn ICELAND Glacial Face Wash (10/10)
This cleanser is fantastic! It feels incredibly luxurious on the skin and I can fully cleanse my skin with only a pea-sized amount. It’s gentle enough for my acne-prone skin, while leaving my skin completely clean. It also doesn’t strip the skin of moisture, nor leave a film. Just soft, clean skin.
This box contain five samples of products carried at Sephora, along with a perfume sample. You also receive a card for 50 Beauty Insider Points when you make a purchase at Sephora.
This is my first Sephora Play! box and I was incredibly excited to see what it was all about! I love the perfume sample and that I get to try brands that aren’t carried by other subscription boxes!
Benefit The POREfessional Primer (5/10)
Despite it’s cult following, I’m not a huge fan of the POREfessional! While it does a good job filling pores, I can’t get on board with the “primer” part of it. It doesn’t do much to make my makeup apply or wear any better or control my oily skin. I was happy to receive the sample and give it another try, but it’s just not a product for me.
First Aid Beauty Coconut Skin Smoothie Priming Moisturizer (10/10)
This moisturizer has it all–smells great, smooths out any dry skin/flakiness, and helps my makeup to apply and wear beautifully.
Ouai Rose Hair & Body Oil (6/10)
I loved the smell of this and loved it for my body, but it didn’t do a lot for my hair. For an amazing hair oil, try the L’Oreal Lustrous Oil Serum.
Rick Kid Coconut Oil Gel (2/10)
Yet another hair product that didn’t do a ton for me! Plain raw coconut oil is one of my favorite things for my hair and is definitely more budget friendly and effective.
Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in K-Dub (4/10)
As I said previously, I’ve been having a moment with lip products and I was so excited to finally try the infamous Kat Von D liquid lipsticks. I was also super excited to see this fun fuchsia color. The formula is wonderful, but I was disappointed that the color was actually a neon/hot pink. With my hair, I looked like a Barbie (and not in a good way!). I will be saving this one for Halloween…
Overall, I was fairly happy with this month’s boxes! Despite ipsy winning in score, I have to declare Birchbox the winner this month for having my two favorite products of the boxes (the lip paint and mascara). I was disappointed in my first Sephora box and will be canceling it for the time being, but I plan on giving it another chance some day.
Thank you for visiting!
